This special issue offers readers a very unique perspective – a close look across fifty years of the istd publishing Typographic. Half a century on from its inaugral issue, we’re now at the ‘72 point’–where we can take a reflective and critical survey of this extraordinary collection of 72 issues that map the typographic concerns of the society across many distinct eras of design and technology.

It is not only an appropriate moment to be considering what Typographic has
contributed to the canon of typography, but more importantly how it signposts possible futures for the practice of typography.
